Pentagon Investigation Finds Defense Secretary Placed Troops in Danger with Messaging App Conversation.

A long-awaited Pentagon review has concluded that Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth violated official protocols by sharing classified information in a Signal messaging chat, according to a source familiar with the report.

Particulars of the Incident

The chat group in dispute contained details about a scheduled air attack in Yemen targeting Houthi militants. This chat came to light after a journalist for the Atlantic was added as a member.

Other officials in the chat allegedly included Senator JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and former security advisor Mike Waltz. The report did not examine the conduct of Hegseth, as the other officials are not employed at the Department of Defense.

Signal is a publicly available communication application that was not authorized for handling classified information.

Potential Threat to Forces

The inspector general's report determined that the intelligence shared by Hegseth was classified and posed a risk to the safety of US service members if it had been obtained by a foreign enemy force.

Notably, the document also noted that Hegseth had the ability to declassify the information he distributed, though it was unclear whether he actually exercised that authority.

Hegseth's Reaction

The source said that Hegseth declined an interview by the inspector general. Instead, he submitted a short written response.

In his response, Hegseth asserted he only shared details that would not have risked lives or jeopardized the operation. He further stated that he had the right to declassify material and viewed the investigation to be partisan.

Future Actions

The completed report has been provided to Congress. An unclassified version is anticipated to be released in the coming days.
