The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US against five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This row risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.
